7 January 1869

Married

In Benton, Dec. 31st, by Rev. A.C. Mallory, Rev. Ezra Marvin of Reading Center, and Mrs. Lucinda McAlpine of Starkey.

Enos Olmstead, residing at Castleton and well known in this section, on Thursday of last week, while driving a team and sleigh through a gate, was fatally injured in consequence of the team being frightened by some small boys jumping upon the sleigh, and he was thrown violently against the gate post…. He was a brother-in-law of Dr. Teal of this place.

14 January 1869

Married, on the 13th instant, at the residence of the bride’s father in this village, by Rev. D. Magie, Mr. Oscar C. Squyer to Miss Emily F. Sherman, only daughter of Henry S. Sherman, Esq.

John H. Sweeney, a respected citizen of Palmyra, formerly proprietor of the Eagle Hotel and more recently agent of the Charter Oak Life Insurance Company, committed suicide a few days since by shooting himself with a pistol through the head….

Married, at the home of the bride in Sheldrake, Seneca county, on Tuesday the 12th inst., by Rev. N.M. Wheeler, Mr. Henry L. Cleveland and Miss Sophe, daughter of James Burlew, Esq., all of Sheldrake.

21 January 1869

Wm. B. Bolt, an aged and much esteemed citizen of the town of Reading, was found dead on Thursday afternoon last, in his barn, still grasping the reins of the horses with which he had been at work…. He was 88 years old….

Married

    At the residence of James Tims in Penn Yan, on the 14 inst., by Rev. David Magie, Mr. George A. Fordon and Miss Hannah Tims, both of Geneva.

    On Tuesday, Jan 5th, at the home of the bride, by the Rev. D.B. Gray, Mr. Barnard Gelder of Jerusalem and Miss Clara S. Wood of Geneva.

The Dundee Record of last week announced the death in Starkey of Solomon Scutt, aged 74 years, Mrs. Charity Titsworth, aged 85, and John J. Kress, aged 81.

Died in this village on the 14th inst., Catharine, wife of Martin Holmes, Esq., aged 67 years…. The funeral service was held at her husband’s residence on Jillett Street on Sunday last.

Frederick Myrtle, son of Wm. K. and Emily E. Ackley of this village, died of diphtheria on Tuesday the 19th inst., aged 3 years and 5 months….

Died at Branchport, January 12th, Vernie, only child of Robert S. and Lida Henries, aged 4 years, 1 month and 6 days.

28 January 1869

Married

    In Penn Yan, January 20th, 1869, by Rev. Thomas Tousey, Mr. Lewis H. Blake of Starkey, to Miss Katie Lott of Penn Yan.

Died

    At his residence in Italy Hollow, December 5, 1868, after a long and painful illness, Henry C. Garratt, aged 26 years, four months and 24 days….

    In Dundee on the 17th inst., at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Hause, Mr. Field Noble, aged 85.

    On the 14th inst., at Himrods, Elder John Shaw, of the M. E. Church, aged 65 years.

    Hooper Pratt died in Gorham, Ontario Co., on the 8th inst., in the 74th year of his age.

Died of consumption at the residence of Russell R. Fargo, Esq., in Pulteney, on the 11th inst., Judson A. Brink, son-in-law of Mr. Fargo, at the age of 26 years. Mr. Brink was…for several years a resident of Minnesota, where he left a fine estate. He was a native of  Steuben county…. He leaves a wife…and one child….

4 February 1869

An employee of the Central Railroad, by the name of Patrick Powers, was instantly killed at Canandaigua a week ago Monday, by stepping off the cars when in motion….

Died in Olean, Wednesday morning, Jan. 27, 1869, of congestion of the lungs, Charles B., only son of Charles F. and Martha E.B. Dickinson, aged 10 months and 12 days….

Died, Jan 28, 1869 at the residence of her son-in-law John W. Ross, in Torrey, Mrs. Roxana Stark, mother of our townsmen Oliver, Charles M. and Wm. Stark, aged 75 years.

11 February 1869

Hon. H. S. Walbridge, a former eminent citizen of Ithaca, was killed on the Erie Railroad, near New York City on Wednesday of last week….

Died in this village on Monday last, Mrs. Brown, the wife of Hon. Morris Brown, after a long illness….

18 February 1869

We hear a painful report that Sylvester Denton, formerly of this place, died a few days ago in Brooklyn, in consequence of accidental poisoning….

David T. Lee, a former resident of this county and a son of Sherman Lee, died on Friday the 5th inst., at Bloomville, Seneca Co., Ohio. He was related to a large number of people in this county, and a brother of Mrs. Charles Coleman of Benton. His age was 56 years.

    In Dresden, Feb. 24th, by Rev. J.W. Putnam, Mr. Isaac V. Lameraux of Lodi and Miss Kettie Pettingill of Dresden.

    By the same and at the same time, Mr. Robert VanFleet of Lodi and Miss Lillie E. Pettingill, both daughters of Mr. Pettingill of Dresden.

    On Thursday evening, Feb. 18th at the residence of the bride’s mother, by the Rev. G.W. Mayer, Whitford B. Wyman of Potter and Rachel H. Crawford of this place.

    In Starkey on the 11th inst., by Rev. P. Olney, Mr. Wm. D. Semans and Mrs. Hettie Cline, both of Starkey.

    At the Methodist Parsonage in Dundee, on the 11th inst., by Elder J. Landreth, Mr. Jeremiah W. Foster and Mrs. Margaret Tooker, both of Starkey….

The people of this community were greatly startled last Thursday morning by the announcement that Benjamin Joy was dead…. Mr. Joy was born in Fabius, Onondaga county, in the year 1800, and moved to Ludlowville, Tompkins county, in 1814, where he resided 48 years and until he took up his residence in Penn Yan….
