Part III: Cemeteries in the town of Torrey

A cemetery association was organized in 1868 and several earlier burials within the present cemetery limits were mapped, with the markers moved to reflect the new lot layout. The village retains the association's early records.

The lots are numbered, and in the following listing, if it is known from the older records in which lot a burial is located, this is noted in a bracket like this: [2: A R McLean]; there was no attempt made to search all the more recent records, so for the existence and location of many 20th-century burials it will be necessary for the researcher to go to the village office and use the records there.

This cemetery contains very many unmarked burials, whether they were never marked or are now simply missing their markers is unknown. This is a well-documented cemetery and several readings were compiled to make this list, along with a physical reading of the cemetery itself As noted above, the village's cemetery records were extremely helpful, as were those kept by the late town historian Betty Smalley.

It should again be noted here that the entire cemetery was read, but only the oldest burial records were consulted, complete up through about the first decade of the twentieth century. Sometimes these records include remarks about the buried person, and these have been quoted in the listing. The cemetery is well-maintained, but many of the stones are difficult to read, particularly those at the west end near the railroad.
