Burk Cemetery: Notes
|This is one of few survivors of what must once have been many small family burying grounds in Italy.
The now-forested hills were almost completely stripped of trees during the nineteenth century and used for pasturing sheep, and no doubt family plots were dug on most farms.
This one has been abandoned for a long time, and though less than 50 feet from Burke Hill Road is nearly invisible, and no doubt will be completely so before many more years pass. When read by the compilers, there was only one stone standing, and myrtle and the surrounding woods were fast taking over. The plot is on private property about a quarter of a mile up the hill from the Italy Valley Road intersection.
