Part IX: Hillside Cemetery in Dundee

Hillside Cemetery, Section D, Part 1: Notes

Section D Section D is paired with C, just as section A is paired with B. The proprietary cemetery was largely confined to sections A and B, which run up the hill perpendicular to the road; the association cemetery expended into sections C and D, which run across the hill parallel with the road.

The two sections are separated by a driveway, but the numbering continues across it, in paired rows of odd- and even-numbered lots. Lot 1 is in the southwest corner of section D, with lot 2 adjacent. Lots 1 to 11 and lots 2 to 12 run up the hill next to one another. The odd-numbered lots from 49 to 57and the even-numbered lots from 48 to 58 are next; after that the pairs are more regular. Lots 83 to 103 and lots 84 to 104 form the third pair, then lots 135 to 143 and lots 136 to 144; then lots 179 to 187 and lots 180 to 188. The last row is a single one containing lots 203 to 207. The map at right is purely schematic; the section narrows at its east end.

Thus the vault and section B lie to the west, section C uphill to the north, and section F with much more recent burials to the east.

Again, as with the previous sections, it must be noted that the official record of the cemetery is kept by the village clerk, who has the last word on lot locations and owners. This list represents a reading of the gravestones, augmented to a certain extent by reference to other sources. Where a grave is unmarked and unrecorded, the compilers resorted to these sources to fill out information on individuals and form a logical basis for an assumption of where that individual is buries. Many of the records from before the village's takeover of the cemetery give few hints as to the location of burials, so that while it is realized that logic must have led the compilers astray in a few cases, they did try their best to keep the number as small as possible.
